The Mile Castle is a Wetherspoons Lloyds No.1 pub close to Newcastle rail station. It’s a large pub, even for Wetherspoons, covering three floors, each with a bar sporting up to seven handpumps. It’s highly rated by the local Camra branch for the quality of its beers, which include the familiar Abbott, Doom Bar and Ruddles, but also an interesting choice of other beers from across the country. The pub has the usual Wetherspoons offering of early morning opening and all-day food, but because it’s a Lloyds No.1 you get a bit of music as well.
The building was built for the Newcastle Savings Bank in 1862-3 in the classical style common to many Victorian Banks, and spent most of its life as a Trustees Savings Bank (photo 1). Unlike some other Wetherspoons bank conversions, the Mile Castle is not especially grand inside, but it does have attractive dark wood panelled walls (photo 2).
The name Mile Castle comes from the Roman forts that were built a mile apart along Hadrians Wall. Mile Castle 4 was situated a short walk along Westgate Road from the pub and its remains are buried beneath Newcastle Arts Centre.
