Traditional Town Pub

The Murderers is right in the centre of town close to the main shopping streets, and is fairly busy most of the day. It’s a top real ale pub but is possibly better known as the city’s prime sports bar with several screens. It has won the UK Sports Pub of the Year award and you can watch not only football (all Norwich City games as you might expect) but a big range of other sports as well.

There are no less than 9 handpumps serving 3 regular beers (two from Wolf plus Adnams Ghost Ship) and six changing beers from both Norfolk and further afield. The landlord is one of the founders of the Norwich City of Ale festival, a month long celebration of beer.

The pub’s real name is the Gardeners Arms but the nickname dates back to the 19th century when the victim was either the landlady or her daughter, depending on which story you hear. Photos 5 & 6 show the competing monikers.

The pub is surprisingly large inside, with lots of spaces and corners, and a sizeable upper room at the back. As summer heatwaves in the UK become more frequent it’s worth knowing that the Murderers has air conditioning.
