A.H. Bone was the renowned architect who designed many of Brickwood Brewery’s very distinctive pubs in the Late Victorian and Edwardian periods. He was the first architect in Portsmouth to include a corner tower with a top looking like a witch’s hat, and probably the most spectacular of these is the one on the Nell Gwynne in Southsea which he designed in 1892. Other Portsmouth and Southsea pubs with a witch’s hat tower are the Fawcett and the Florist.

Like many of Southsea’s pubs, the Nell Gwynne is a proper community local with pool, darts and a weekly meat raffle. There are frequent live music acts and the impressive juke box has every top 40 single since 1952.
