Traditional Country Pub, 2* Heritage Pub

The New Inn is a striking 17th century half-timbered pub in the black and white village of Pembridge (photo 1). It has a lovely, unaltered and surprisingly modest interior with old settles, a stone-flagged floor and an inglenook fireplace (photos 3 & 5).

The pub is haunted by two ghosts with military connections who appear to be unrelated to each other. One is a young woman who waits in vain for the return of her lover from the army, and who only appears to other women. The other is a soldier wearing his scarlet tunic, sometimes with a sword and sometimes with a drum.

In front of the pub is the Grade II* listed timber framed and open plan Market Hall which dates from 1520 (photo 4).

The pub sells three real ales, including Hobson’s Town Crier, Ludlow Gold and a changing beer, and has a large range of malt whiskies. Meals are served lunchtimes and evenings.

The pub was once owned by West Country Breweries and one of their ceramic plaques is still there (photo 2). The characterful old inn sign has a faded image of the pub with a garland of hops (photo 6).
