The Northcote is one of Southsea’s many large and imposing corner locals (photo 1). It is unusual in still having two bars, one of which has posters and artefacts celebrating early films. It has a good range of cask ales including two local brews, Taylor’s Landlord and a house beer brewed by Wadworths. It has live sports on TV, darts, pool and occasional live music.
It was built in 1896 for Pike Spicer brewery, the biggest in Portsmouth at the time, and their logos can still be seen carved on the upper walls (photo 2). The ground floor has some nice tiled panels promoting ‘Wines & Spirits’ and ‘Stout & Porter’.
The pub was named after James Northcote, an artist and writer who lived in Portsmouth in the 1770s.
