Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub
The Nursery is a beautifully preserved 1930s pub with wood panelled rooms, stained glass and a bowling green. It’s not a pub you’ll stumble across, hidden away as it is in the quiet suburb of Heaton Norris.
The first room on the left is the lounge with the original bench seating and high quality oak panelling around all four walls. The stained glass is elegant and restrained with each window having no more than two or three small panels of gardening related designs. Above the bar counter is a ‘silk glass’ panel showing drinks glasses, tankards and hand-pumps.
The Smoke Room is similar but without the panels above the bar. The Vault has plainer wood panelling, an original tiled fireplace and a bar counter, also with a ‘silk glass’ panel above (best seen in photo 7).
The Nursery is a Hydes pub and serves all their beers, including two milds and their premium Lowry Golden Ale. It’s a busy community pub with games, newspapers a weekly quiz and occasional live music. The Nursery is one of the few pubs remaining with a bowling green, with a very active membership and available to hire for bowling parties.
Food is a range of pies served with mash, mushy peas and gravy, excellent for soaking up all that beer.
