The Olde Ship in Seahouses stands just up the road from the busy harbour with its fishing vessels and tourist boats to the Farne Islands. (photo 1). It dates from 1745, starting life as a farmhouse and becoming a pub in 1812. For most of its life its main custom was from herring fishermen, not just from Seahouses but from ports like Peterhead, Whitby, Grimsby and Yarmouth. In 1910 the Lawson family became licensees and their descendants still run the pub today. The sign showing the Lawson name probably dates from the 1920s (photo 2).

The public bar of the pub is well known for the amazing collection of seafaring artefacts on the ceiling and walls (photo 3). These have been collected over the past 90 years and include oars, ship’s wheels, Fishing baskets and brass lamps. The bar itself is historic with the counter, bar back and panelling dating back to early last century. The Cabin Bar across the corridor is less dramatic but also unchanged, with its plywood panelled wall and Formica counter top to dating back to the opening of the bar in 1954.

The large patio at the back with its views over the harbour and the sea is hugely popular with diners and drinkers on sunny summer’s days. The Olde Ship has long been a champion of real ale with up to ten cask beers on sale. Food, as you might expect, has a nautical flavour with fish and crab dishes on offer. The pub is also an inn, with accommodation in several rooms.
