Traditional Village Pub

The Packhorse is a small pub in a pretty village under Longstone Edge. Half a mile up the road is Monsal Head with its dramatic view of the viaduct and Wye valley, and the Monsal Trail walking and cycling route.

It is an 18th century pub converted from two miners cottages built with local White Peak limestone and is Grade II listed (photo 1).

Black Sheep Bitter is sold along with three or four beers from Thornbridge Brewery in nearby Bakewell. Food is locally sourced and includes meat from nearby farms and cheese from a local cheesemaker. There is a popular monthly quiz bingo night.

The pub name is probably from its location on a packhorse route over Longstone Moor, which is now the footpath shown on the signpost outside (photo 2).
