Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub

Peter Kavanagh’s is a Liverpool institution. It is named after the eccentric and talented landlord who ran the pub for 53 years from 1897 to 1950.

He revamped the interior in 1929 with large murals by Scottish artist Eric Robinson (photos 3 & 6), windows by stained glass artist William English (photos 4 & 7), and inventive woodwork and furniture designed by himself. His multipurpose pub table includes a water bowl beneath the central ashtray for lighted cigarettes, a shelf, electric bell pushes and pipe holders (photos 3, 6 & 8). Assorted artefacts have been collected over the years and include old radios, an alligator skin, a bicycle and a statue of a waiter carrying a changing selection of bric a brac on his tray.

The pub is part of an 1840s terrace but Kavanagh restyled the frontage in 1920 with maroon and cream tiles and glazed brick (photo 1). The inn sign is a portrait of Peter Kavanagh (photo 4).

The pub has a great selection of real ale and was Liverpool CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2019.
