The Queens Head is a bit of a classic, one of those pubs that sticks in the memory and which you recommend to friends. I first visited when I was young, staying at the youth hostel across the square, and I’ve been back many times since.
What Pub describes it as a near perfect example of a small Cotswold town pub and you can’t argue with that. It’s late 17th century, built of golden Cotswold limestone (photo 1), and inside has flagged floors, beams, high-backed settles and local Donnington ales.
The faded hand-painted inn sign shows Elizabeth I, the favourite of ‘Queens Head’ pub sign designers (photo 2).
