Modern Pub

The Quirky Den is a micropub in an ancient building dating from the 1630s. It’s not especially quirky but it does have a characterful landlord and a lively atmosphere. For beer lovers the big attraction is Theakstons Old Peculier served from wooden sherry or whisky casks. There are three other cask beers, five keg beers including lager and real ciders.

A timeline above the bar shows the previous occupants from 1639, including a fruiterer, sailmaker and tobacconist, right up to the current landlord. The downstairs bar is quite small but if its busy there’s another bar upstairs with a good view over the harbour.

Explorer Captain James Cook lived just across the street in the 1740s when he was an apprentice, and the house is now the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.
