Traditional Country Pub, Pub With Rooms
The Red Lion is an attractive stone-built inn dating from the 1500s on the village green in the popular Yorkshire Dales village of Burnsall (photos 1 & 5). The pub was recently taken over by Thwaites Brewery after being a family business run by the Grayshons since 1991.
The pub attracts diners on day trips from Leeds or Bradford, especially at weekends and there are several seating spaces (photos 2 & 3). For warmer days, the pub garden is right next to the River Wharfe (photo 4).
There is a high class menu and meat is sourced from nearby farms and game from local estates. Accommodation is available in rooms in the pub and in the Manor House, and there are self catering cottages. Cask beers are from Thwaites plus one or two from local breweries.
The pub has a lovely old metal Red Lion inn sign on an elaborate metal frame (photo 2). The Red Lion is of course the most popular pub name in Britain and may date back to both the coat of arms of John of Gaunt and the heraldic arms of Scotland popularised by King James I.
The Red Lion is on the Dales Way long distance footpath and the Way of the Roses cycle route.
