Widecombe lies in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park. It is famous for the rhyme featuring Tom Cobley, and the souvenir shops in the village centre make the most of it.
The Rugglestone Inn is on a narrow lane on the edge of Widecombe, and probably would have met with the approval of the the famous Tom Cobley. It’s Grade II listed, built as a granite farm cottage in the 1700s and converted to a pub in 1832. When I first visited there was no bar counter – just a door with casks behind. It’s been brought up to date in recent years and it now has a counter, but it still has the feel of the simple farmer’s pub it once was.
It serves food sourced locally and is a longstanding Good Beer Guide pub with ale straight from the barrel.
