Traditional Town Pub

The Ship & Mitre is one of Liverpool’s top real ale pubs and serves 8 changing cask beers. Another 4 handpumps dispense real cider and there’s a large range of bottled and canned beers from around the world. The pub also organises a beer festival across the Mersey in Port Sunlight. Pub food comes from the One Pan Band and includes dishes like Beef Scouse and Curry Wurst Dawg.

The Ship & Mitre was built in 1937 as the brewery tap for Bent’s Brewery which stood just behind. It has a white stone frontage which gives the impression of tiles, and the original Crittall style metal windows on all floors (photo 1). Inside, the main bar area downstairs is on two levels, with an upper carpeted area (photo 5) and a lower area with a wooden floor (photo 3). No art deco features remain on this floor, but the function room on the first floor is mostly unchanged from the 1930s.

It has floor to ceiling wood panelling, an original bar counter and even the remains of the push buttons used to summon service (photo 4). In the toilets, tiles depict sporting events and the stairs up to the room still have the original tiling (photo 2). It’s a well used function room and it hosts quite a few meetings, but you’ll be allowed to view it if it’s free.
