This was once two pubs, the Lone Yachtsman and the Coal Exchange but in 1991 they merged and became the Spice Island. This is the name of the harbour area of Portsmouth where the pub stands. Both parts date back to the early 19th century and it’s clear from the sign on the building on the left that it was once called the Union Tavern (photo 1). It was actually also called the Jolly Sailor before it was renamed the Lone Yachtsman to honour round-the-world yachtsman Alec Rose.
Photo 2 was taken from the seating area on ‘The Point’ (not part of the pub) and shows the full building with the two former pubs left and right and a 1991 addition in the middle. Unsurprisingly the interior is pretty spacious though its location on the harbour means it is usually pretty full with tourists throughout the year. Beers are from the Greene King range and meals are served lunchtimes and evenings.
The tall structure beyond the pub on the the third photo is the Spinnaker Tower which opened in 2005 and was designed to resemble a spinnaker sail (photo 3). The Still & West pub is on the far right of photo 2.
