Traditional town pub
The Swan and Railway is a red brick building in (according to Historic England) the Scottish Baronial style (photo 1). It had its Victorian interior beautifully restored in 2018 and has been a star of the Wigan pub scene ever since. The main bar is long and narrow with the wooden counter on the left and maroon upholstered seating all the way along the right.
On the other side of the bar is the original entrance corridor with tiled walls and mosaic tiled floor (photo 2). Above the bar counter is an impressive stained glass window depicting a swan, added during the restoration (photo 3). The room off the corridor is an elegant lounge with green painted walls and the same maroon seating as the bar (photo 4).
There are seven cask ales, always including Draught Bass and usually two dark beers, four traditional ciders and a long list of craft canned beers. Coffee and tea is served all day. Pies with mash, mushy peas and gravy are the house speciality, and there are also classic pub meals like sausage and mash and Toad in the Hole. Wigan Folk Club meets on Mondays, there is live music on Fridays and Northern Soul every third Sunday.
The pub has accommodation in seven ensuite rooms and with Wigan North Western Station across the road and Wigan Wallgate a short walk away it’s the ideal stopover.
