The Talbot is just off the market square and is a great example of a pub that manages to be successful as both a dining pub and a top beer pub (photo 1). Tables have the times of reservations on them, and even when the pub is full of diners there is still space to just have a drink.
Food is pub favourites with a twist plus a range of burgers, and sandwiches are available until 5.00pm. There are five cask beers with Settle Mainline and Theakston Best Bitter as regulars and three changing beers, always including a dark beer like Settle Ernie’s Milk Stout. The pub is a frequent award winner from the local Camra branch and in 2022 it was presented with a certificate for achieving 10 consecutive years in the Good Beer Guide (photo 3).
There is one large shaped room (photo 2) and a huge terraced beer garden at the back for warmer days. There is a “bingo quiz” twice a month which allows even the weakest quiz teams a chance of winning. Darts, dominoes and pool are played and newspapers are available.
The pub claims a founding date of 1642 which would make it the oldest pub in town, and the large archway leading to a courtyard suggests that it could once have been a coaching inn.
