Test Match Hotel, Nottingham

The Grade II* Listed Test Match in Nottingham has one of the best preserved interiors of any art deco building in the UK.  The Georgian style facade is grand and detailed (photo 4) but it doesn’t prepare you for the stylish moderne features inside.

The two storey entrance hall and lounge is divided by a sweeping staircase (photo 1). This area has wood panelled walls and a long bar counter with brass banding. The lounge leads to the imposing assembly room which has the feel of a 1930s cinema with its curved ceiling and uplighting (photo 2).  At the back and to the left is the slightly hidden public bar, almost entirely unaltered with its banded bar counter and patterned terrazzo floor (photo 3). Photos were taken in 2020 when Covid restrictions were in place, which explains the signage and stickers on the floor.

Quality food is available all day and there is a good choice of beer from Greene King and from local breweries. There is a cocktail bar upstairs, and live music in the assembly room most weekends.
