The Three Pigeons in Halifax is a 1930s pub on the edge of the town centre with a lovely art deco interior. It has a unique octagonal Yorkshire-style drinking lobby with a patterned terrazzo floor and oak panelled walls (photos 2 & 5). From the lobby there are entrances to three rooms, two of which have original metal art deco door signs (photo 3). The lounge at the front right of the pub has its original fixed seating and fireplace surround (photo 4). The Tap Room rear right and the Bar Lounge front left also have original seating, and the Tap Room still has its art deco fireplace with wood surround and tiling (photo 7).
The bar back is pure art deco with its wooden shelving and mirror advertising Green Label beer (photo 6). This was a beer from Websters Brewery who built the pub in 1932 to designs by Jackson & Fox of Halifax. The exterior is traditional (photo 1) and doesn’t have the streamlined art deco moderne design that became popular later in the 30s.
The list of beers in photo 5 shows that the pub is now owned by Ossett brewery and sells four or more of their cask beers plus at least one guest beer. Keg beers include Salt Jute IPA and Yon lager, both from Ossett, and Moretti lager. There is no hot food but chilled pies, pasties and sausage rolls are available.
The Three Pigeons hosts a number of groups and societies and is popular with cask ale enthusiasts. The Shay Stadium, which hosts both FC Halifax Town and Halifax Panthers rugby league club, is within walking distance and supporters of both clubs can be found in the pub on match days.
