The Walnut Tree is a classic unaltered Victorian village local situated right on the village green (photo 1). The main entrance takes you into a tiny snug with benches either side which once served as the jug and bottle, or off sales (photo 2). It’s likely that customers would have used the benches for a quick drink and a chat while they waited for their bottles to be filled.
The room on the left is the public bar with its full height wood panelling which is also pretty much as it was when the pub was first built (photo 3). And it’s not just the look of the pub that is unchanged: beer is still fetched from the cellar (the handpumps are unused), no food is served and there is still an outside gents toilet.
The carved date on the gable wall shows that the pub was built in 1888, probably by long term owners Ridleys Brewery (photo 4).
