Traditional Pub, 1* Heritage Pub

Situated a short walk from the canal basin at Little Venice, the Warwick Castle is a characterful and little altered Victorian pub. It’s also in elegant Maida Vale with its grand mansions and the locals are a real mix of wealthy city types and bohemian canal boat dwellers.

The pub and the neighbouring shop fronts are part of a mid 19th century Grade II listed terrace and all are painted the same dark green (photo 1). As you approach it’s hard to miss the lantern on a huge iron bracket which must have looked very inviting on dark Victorian streets (photo 4).

The entrance to the main right hand bar is through a fine lobby with wood panelled walls, a tiled floor and stained glass door windows (photo 2). Inside is the original ornately carved bar counter with an unusual protruding top (photo 3). The room has match-boarded wooden walls and a nice Bass mirror in front of a leather upholstered sofa (photo 5). The door on the left of the bar takes you to another tiled-floor lobby and to the smoke room.  This room is wood panelled and has another, larger Bass mirror above an original marble fireplace.

There’s quite a small range of cask beers but it usually includes Taylors Landlord and the cleverly named Made of Ale, a house beer otherwise known as Hardy & Hansons Bitter. Food, mostly pub favourites, is sold until late and on Sundays you can indulge in a traditional roast.

The pubs of Maida Vale feature in Maurice Gorham’s classic 1939 book The Local, illustrated by prolific artist Edward Ardizzone. His image of the Warwick Arms (below right) shows two well dressed gentlemen leaving the pub. The cream frontage (though not the green lower floor), the lantern and the bracket holding the inn sign are all still there today.

The pub is close to Warwick Avenue Tube station and only half a mile from Paddington rail station.
