The Wasdale Head Inn is in a spectacular setting at the head of remote Wastwater, the deepest lake in the Lake District. The peaks behind the inn are the Pillar and Kirk Fell (photos 1 & 2) and nearby is Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. This famous climber’s pub has slate floored bars, one basic for muddy boots and another with wood panelled walls. The pub is known as the birthplace of climbing and the photos of early climbers are remarkable.

A previous landlord, the climber Will Ritson, now has a bar named after him (photo 3). He was known for his tall tales and inspired the annual World’s Biggest Liar competition, now held at the Bridge Inn further down the valley.

The accommodation includes bedrooms, self catering apartments and the pub’s own campsite. Food is available until 8pm and six changing beers are served.
