Traditional Town Pub

The Brunswick quickly became a pioneering real ale freehouse after it reopened in 1987 following investment by local businessmen. It’s remained that way ever since with a massive list of 14 beers including six regulars and a changing list of eight from micro breweries across the country. The pub has its own brewery and is owned by Leicester brewery Everards, and beers from both feature on the regular list.

It was built in 1841 in the Georgian style popular at the time and is the oldest purpose built railway pub in the world. It’s also one of the relatively few pubs in a triangular wedge or flat iron shape (photos 1 & 2).

There are several rooms with a snug at the front of the wedge and the main bar and three other rooms leading off the narrow flagstoned corridor (photos 3 – 5). There’s also a large function room upstairs which hosts live jazz every first and third Thursday, and takes bookings for other events. A full food menu is available until 7pm weekdays (except Monday) and until 4pm on Sundays.

The Brunswick is a short walk from Pride Park and gets pretty busy on match days. The pub is just around the corner from another famous real ale pub, the Alexandra.
