The Crown and Trumpet is a picturesque Cotswold stone pub just off the village green in Broadway (photo 1). Like the best pubs in tourist hotspots it manages to cater equally well for visitors and for locals. On our first visit back the early noughties we were welcomed to join the quiz and had a great time chatting to the locals. We’ve been back many times since and although the quiz night is no more, the great range of ales and the good quality food is still there. The beers are from the North Cotswold Brewery just 10 miles away across the Warwickshire border, and from a select range of other local breweries. A good choice of real ciders is on tap too and the pub is a favourite of the local Camra branch.
Until the 1990s the Crown and Trumpet was tied to another Warwickshire brewer, Flowers of Stratford on Avon, and there are mirrors, plaques and other memorabilia on the walls (photos 3 & 4). Flowers (and then Whitbread) ran most of the pubs in Broadway and the north Cotswolds, including the nearby Horse and Hound.
Live music is a thing here and there is a jazz and blues night on Thursdays and pop acts on Fridays and Saturdays. The pub also does accommodation and there are five ensuite bedrooms.
The inn sign shows the Royal Herald with the trumpet that welcomes royalty to the town (photo 2).
