Traditional Town Pub
The Category A listed Crystal Palace was built in 1855-56 by John Baird, inspired by Joseph Caxton’s Crystal Palace in London (photo 1). It was constructed with a cast iron frame with over a hundred arched windows (photo 2) to create a greenhouse effect.
For most of its life it was a furniture warehouse and store but was taken over by Wetherspoons and converted to a pub. The pub takes up both the ground and first floors (photo 3) and you can travel between the two in the original cast iron elevator (photo 4). Another impressive building owned by Wetherspoons in central Glasgow is the Counting House.
Like all Wetherspoons it’s open from 8.00am for food but for alcohol without food you’ll have to wait until 11. The large range of cask beers always includes Doom Bar and Abbot, and there is a good range of changing, mostly Scottish ales. The pub is a short walk from Glasgow Central Station.
