Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub

There are two good reasons to visit the Old Toll Bar, the exuberant Victorian interior and the remarkable range of live events all through the week.

Camra’s Pub Heritage group say that the Old Toll Bar has Glasgow’s finest pub interior and its hard to disagree once you walk through the door. Most of what you see is original, including the impressive wooden gantry behind the bar with whisky barrels, mirror and central clock (photo 1). The long elaborately carved bar counter has a recently added stone top.

On the wood panelled walls there are four large painted mirrors promoting ‘Very Old Vintage Port’, Mc Ewans Brewery, Black & Gold whisky and Robert Youngers ales (photo 2). On the pillars, inner doors, the old office door and the side entrance doors there is art nouveau stained glass with curious repeated motifs (photo 4).

Entertainment and events include open mic, old time sessions, salsa dancing, blues dancing, a quiz, live music acts, soul and funk DJs, drag karaoke and comedy! There is one changing cask beer, a small but interesting selection of craft kegs and a range of canned beers.

The pub is south of the river and a short walk from Shields Road metro station, or buses 9, 9A and 10 from Buchanan Street or Central Station go right past. The wonderful Laurieston Bar is close to Bridge Street Metro, just two stops from Shields Road.
