Traditional Town Pub

Step into the State Bar in Glasgow’s Charing Cross and you’ll assume you’re in an unaltered Victorian or Edwardian pub. But the original interior disappeared as far back as the 1960s and what you see now is an impressive restoration. The large, traditional island bar looks very much like a Victorian original and other additions include a cosy alcove and a large antique stained glass window (photos 2, 3 & 4).

It’s an award winning real ale pub serving regular beers such as Oakham Citra and Green Devil, and Almasty Green all from south of the border. There is also a range of often unusual changing beers. It’s only a 10 minute walk to a pioneer of real ale in Glasgow, the Bon Accord.

The photos on the wall of the alcove show artistes who performed at the nearby King’s Theatre. Older readers might recognise Andy Stewart and Moira Anderson who starred in the BBC series White Heather Club, and American pianist and entertainer Liberace, who didn’t.
