Back in the last century I was early for a job interview in Glasgow so I stopped for a pint at the Bon Accord. Amazingly I got the job and became a regular there for the next couple of years. I chose the Bon Accord because at the time it was one of very few pubs in the Good Beer Guide in Glasgow and indeed one of the few to sell any real ale.

I’m very pleased to say that it’s still in the Good Beer Guide and sells more than 800 real ales a year. It has a great choice of bottled beers from across the world and, to show it’s keeping up to speed, has a fridge full of canned craft ales. It has also become a whisky specialist stocking a remarkable 500 malts and hosting five malt whisky clubs a month. Traditional home-cooked food is available all day until 8.45pm.

It’s on the ground floor of an imposing Category B Listed 1860s tenement and is just a few doors down from the impressive Mitchell Library, possibly the foremost public library in the UK.
